Dr. Dan B. Tran

Education and experience in both engineering and medicine are what make Dr. Dan Tran an expert in Vision Correction technology. Dr. Tran personally selects the best technology for each of his patients. In practice since 1999, Dr. Tran was the first surgeon in the world to use an IntraLase laser to perform All Laser LASIK procedures, Dr. Tran introduced IntraLase technology to TLC Laser Eye Centers in Newport Beach. This technology is now the General Standard in Care for the field of laser vision correction.

Dr. Tran combines the IntraLase laser with Custom LASIK to deliver a clear picture of what his patients see, allowing him to correct vision with incredibly superior outcomes. Studies have shown that the combined use of the technologies actually increases a patient’s chance to achieve results of 20/20 or better. With a procedure to precise, it’s now a crucial component for vision correction approved by NASA, and the Department of Defense, for U.S. Service personnel.

Dr. Tran is also the first surgeon in the world to combine the commercial use of IntraLase technology with intracorneal rings (Intacs™) to treat patients with keratoconus; a disorder that leads to a loss of vision in young adults. With his expertise, Dr. Tran has been instrumental in mentoring other surgeons around the world about this treatment.

Highly proficient, Dr. Tran is one of the few surgeons in the world to access the latest in LASIK technology to correct near vision for those who wear reading glasses and are over the age of 40, in addition to treating cataracts. Dr. Tran’s state-of-the-art technology allows him to see real time outcomes as he performs surgery – so that all adjustments can be made almost immediately, thus optimizing the results of each surgery.

In 1999, Coastal Vision received corporate contracts with both the Long Beach Police Department and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department to be the official LASIK provider for both law enforcement departments. Eye doctors, physicians, and high-level executives, have also chosen Dr. Dan B. Tran for his surgical skills. Those who know the industry well prefer to have Dr. Tran as their surgeon. Dr. Lisa D. Garbutt

Board-certified ophthalmologist Lisa Garbutt, MD, joined Coastal Vision in 2014. As a fellowship-trained surgeon, she specializes in cataract surgery, corneal transplants, LASIK, and certain oculoplastic procedures to improve vision such as blepharoplasty. She is also extensively trained in DSAEK, a breakthrough technique for treating corneal diseases.

In addition to treating medical and surgical diseases of the eye, Dr. Garbutt enjoys being involved in various FDA trials conducted at Coastal Vision. She completed her medical degree cum laude at Boston University School of Medicine and received her ophthalmology training at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine Shiley Eye Institute. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

Dr. Garbutt is well respected and well liked by her patients, as well as her peers, for her compassion with patient care, her meticulous surgical skills and her comprehensive approach to ophthalmology. She has successfully performed thousands of cataract and cornea surgical cases prior to joining Coastal Vision.

Happy to be in Orange County, where she grew up, Dr. Garbutt enjoys running, hiking, and spending time with friends and family.

Dr. Betsy Nguyen

Betsy Nguyen, MD is a board certified cataract & glaucoma specialist, with 14 years of experience in her field. Trained at the prestigious, internationally recognized Jules Stein Eye Institute, at UCLA, Dr. Nguyen then became active in glaucoma research with the USC Doheny Eye Institute.

After earning her medical degree with highest distinction at the top of her class from UCLA School of Medicine, Dr. Nguyen went on to UCSF for her fellowship in glaucoma. As a diplomate of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the California Academy of Eye Physicians & Surgeons, she was one of the team eye doctors for both the LA Angels and the Anaheim Ducks.

Dr. Betsy Nguyen is an ardent researcher, to further treatment options available for all, and has extensive expertise in managing glaucoma and cataracts together. These commonly concomitant conditions are best treated together—treating one and ignoring the other will result in long-term problems for patients. Dr. Nguyen uses the most advanced technologies available to combine the treatment in an integrated fashion, offering patients with cataract and glaucoma the very latest in surgery and research.

Customizing care to every one of her patients, Dr. Nguyen remains passionate about what she does and spends quality time counseling each one. “I give every patient the same level of attention and surgical excellence as I would give my own family.”

Dr. Ashley T. Owyang

Dr. Ashley Owyang was born and raised in Northern California. She attended the University of California, Berkeley where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Integrative Biology. She continued at the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry where she earned her Doctorate of Optometry Degree and graduated magna cum laude.

Dr. Owyang’s extensive clinical training includes various externship sites throughout the country, including the Vandenberg Air Force Base in Central California, Castle Family Health Center in Atwater, California, Omni Eye Services in Iselin, New Jersey, and the VA Miami Medical Center in Miami, Florida. She gained experience in comprehensive eye exams, managing and treating ocular diseases, specialty contact lens fittings, and cataract and refractive post-operative care. She is committed to providing personalized and compassionate eye care for her patients.

Dr. Owyang volunteers with OneSight, which provides free eye exams and glasses to local kids in need. She has also volunteered abroad on a medical mission trip to Ecuador with VOSH (Volunteer Optometrist in Service to Humanity) where she helped organize a community clinic that provided eye care for over 1,900 residents.

As the Clinical Research Coordinator at Coastal Vision, Dr. Owyang manages and oversees multiple FDA clinical trials. "I enjoy being involved in studies on new advanced ophthalmic surgical devices and treatments. We get firsthand experience with innovative technology that benefits our patients and continues to expand the scope of eye care."

Outside of work, Dr. Owyang is passionate about food and cooking. She enjoys trying new recipes and discovering new restaurants. Dr. Owyang loves traveling with her husband and exploring the world through local cuisine.

Dr. Tu Doan

Doctor Tu Doan received her Bachelor degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine. She then earned her Doctorate of Optometry degree from the Southern California College of Optometry (Marshall B. Ketchum University) in 2006.

Dr. Doan is Glaucoma certified and is licensed in the use of diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents. She is qualified in managing and treating ocular diseases, fitting specialty contact lenses, and managing pre and post-operative care for cataract and refractive surgeries. She had extensive clinical training at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, West Los Angeles VA Medical Center in West Los Angeles, California, and Crownpoint Health Care Facility in Crownpoint, New Mexico.

Dr. Doan joined Coastal Vision in 2011 and enjoys helping patients enhance their lives by improving or protecting their vision. "It is such a great feeling when a patient thanks you for helping her do activities she enjoys or loves because she can see better or save a patient’s vision by diagnosing and treating a vision threating eye disease or problem."

Coastal Vision has allowed Dr. Doan to be involved in some FDA clinical trials pertaining to new surgical devices and treatments. The exposure to new ophthalmic technology allows her to better serve and treat patients.

Dr. Doan was raised in Orange County. In her spare time she enjoys the outdoors, fitness, watching sports, and spending time with her family. She has two very active boys that keep her on her toes.
